Just been looking at a report on a study of Jewish population in New York. It’s "The Jewish Community Study of New York: 2002 Highlights" and I found it fascinating reading. For one thing, it brings into focus the need for Jewish community services like an Internet jewish dating site where young Jews can meet online. The reason for this is that the population is getting smaller, both as a number and as a proportion of the metropolitan area, which is now bigger. Most of the city’s Jews, young and old, live in Brooklyn . There were 456,00 of them there at the time of the census. Brooklyn is a traditional Jewish center , but there are also large numbers of Jews in Manhattan, where 243,000 lived at census time. The report gave us household size, and this was interesting. Particularly as I am interested in the young Jewish population and their need to be meeting each other and marrying. In Brooklyn there were 171,000 Jewish household. In Manhattan, some 155,000. So the Brooklyn households were bigger!
