The Herschede grandfather clocks company began its journey in Ohio way back in 1877. The clock making business was coupled with many other products such as watches, jewellery and also importing diamonds. In a period of ten years, the company grew in stature so much that it became one of the largest clock distributors in the entire region. The standard of craftsmanship during the nineteenth century was so excellent that Hershede was given many gold medals in recognition of his work throughout his lifetime. This prompted him to make inroads into the international arena where he became a household name in clock-making.
